A tamper is arguably the most important Maintenance of Way (MOW) machine for maintaining the railroad. Think of it as a street paver repairing a bumpy road. This machine smooths out track defects such as cross level, profile, and warp spots on railroad tracks by squeezing and compacting ballast (stone) between railroad ties and switch timbers.
