Conrail has substantial real estate holdings, both operating and non-operating, in the three states (New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan) in which it conducts freight operations. Additionally it owns numerous non-operating properties in several other states in the Northeast and Midwest. The availability of vacant property for lease or sale, regardless of location, will be determined on a case by case basis. Acquiring an easement or license interest in property is also sometimes an option.
